Media FM 107.3FM, launches in BirminghamPosted: April 186th December, 2004 A new radio station, Media FM 107.3FM, launched in Birmingham last week with a month long radio license. The station hopes to serve as a training ground to future presenters and producers from ethnic minority backgrounds, and serve the local community in a variety of languages. Media FM had previously received a license in June this year, and they hope to build a strong name at grassroots level. This will make it possible for them to acquire a five year license in summer 2005. The station is the brainchild of Nahim Mahmood and Barry Curtis. The former has 16 years of radio experience, starting in hospital radio. He went on to work for Radio Harmony and KIX 96 in Coventry, and then on to present the breakfast show on London's Sunrise Radio. He was head of music at Radio Asia and assistant head of programming at Radio XL. With some experience in producing programmes for Zee TV and Channel Four, he now runs his own ethnic marketing, promotions and film making company. Barry Curtis was the first afro-Caribbean to work for the BBC in 1969 and went on to Beacon Radio in Wolverhampton, 1978. He then became director of programming at Radio Harmony in 1990 , Kix 96 in 1994 , and Radio XL in 1996 till 2002. He was also involved in getting the DAB license for Radio XL in Birmingham and put the Media FM Studios together. The station aims to promote issues around health, education and social & economic deprivation in inner city Birmingham. It will also introduce a daily show in the Pushto language, in addition to Bengali, Mirpuri, Gujarati and Punjabi. Media contact: Nahim Mahmood 0777 874 1234 or 0121 248 0060.
